This Thanksgiving, Be Your Better Self

I'm a pretty skeptical person by nature. I'm not one to drink the Kool-Aid blindly. And please pardon me for ringing my own bell, but I consider myself to be pretty smart. I believe that we were given a perfect world. Perfect in its imperfection. But we as humans tend to be pretty short-sighted and we've done a lot to mess it up. Yet it still keeps giving to us. It still keeps trying to do its part. I believe we can all step up and be our better selves and make this world a much, much better one. If we all tried, it could be pretty close to a Utopia. The problem is, many of us tend to fall back into our "lesser selves" way too easily.

I wrote a blog about what this recent US presidential election means and how we should all strive to be our better selves.

So this Thanksgiving, as with last, I'm not going to ask an animal to die for me. I realized a long time ago, through research, that no animal needs to die for me to live. That's actually a quote, by Howard Lyman, I think. In fact, I realized I'd be a lot healthier if I didn't eat animals.

Animals have the same basic wants and desires that we do. They feel pain, they feel terror, they feel suffering, just as we do.

Don't be fooled about farming practices. Farms are no longer the quaint, Norman Rockwell-esque entities that most people picture. Farms are factories. They are extremely competitive and the dollar is the bottom line. The owners live in McMansions while the animals exist as objects. They exist in filthy, extremely cruel, cramped conditions. Turkeys are fed loads of cheap antibiotics, growth hormones, and steroids to produce more meat. In fact, most of them raised for Thanksgiving get so big that they can't support their own weight. They can't even walk.

I decided a long time ago that I couldn't in good conscience be my "better self" if I supported the kind of person who would do this to an animal for their own gain while turning a blind eye to the extreme suffering they are causing.

So this Thanksgiving, I will give thanks, and I will be my better self. I will join my family and I will bring my own food. I will either bring vegan black bean tamales, vegetarian cheese and jalapeno tamales, 'Vegan Medley' tamales, vegan 'Celebration Stuffed Roast,' or vegan Tofurky.

I will be happy, my family will be happy, and the animals will be happy.

Sarah Palin's Evil Killing of Wolves

Althought I tend to vote Democrat, I put my country above any party. I use my head and do my research - and I look around with an open mind and take in what's going on. How's the economy? How's the environment? How's healthcare? I take note of things, like two of my jobs in recent years basically being outsourced to India and China. I try to make the best decision I can with the information I have. I don't judge by party or race.

In this election, a lot has been said and written about how much the GOP paid for Sarah's clothes and makeup (150k for the clothes, 50k for the makeup/makeup artist.) Much has been written about her using state funds to fly her kids around illegally, and then doctoring the forms to make it look legit.

There's a whole slew of things: The ceremony to protect her from witches. How she killed the local environment in Wasilla when she was the mayor. How she charged $1200.00 to rape victims for the investigations. The list just goes on and on and on with this woman.

But here's something many people haven't seen.

Sarah Palin has a deep desire to wipe animals to extinction. I've been active on Defenders of Wildlife campaigns to save the wolves from her since before most people in the US had ever heard of her. Her policies on wildlife are unexplainable and indefensible. This woman is evil.
